About Sean Moriarty:

I have lived in Higganum for twenty years with my wife Tanja. We have two children, Erin who is a 2009 graduate of HKHS and Christopher who is a junior at HKHS. I have served on the Middletown Police Department for 22 years and am currently a Lieutenant. I am a veteran of the United States Army having served in the Middle East during the Gulf War. I have been active in local sports as a coach and referee for several years with my children as they participated in Little League, H-K Recreation and Travel Basketball.

Having worked in government all my adult life, I have a keen sense of its everyday workings. I ran the Traffic Division which entailed the coordination of various city and private agencies in order to get large-scale traffic projects off the ground. I am also in charge of writing and monitoring a portion of the police department budget. I understand the fiscal constraints of a municipal budget and the need to be cautious and creative in managing our tax dollars wisely.

I feel the important issues that face Haddam are taxes, the proper commercial development of Higganum and Tylerville centers (which include infrastructure upgrades such as sewer and traffic flow improvements), a final resolution to the household waste disposal issue, and a governing body that will encourage the citizens of Haddam to participate in the governing process.  Taxes and commercial development go hand and hand. We need to encourage businesses to come to town. This would lessen the tax burden on the average home owner while having the added benefit of creating new jobs in our community. I would encourage reasonable tax incentives for new businesses looking to relocate here and to look at the possibility of developing a small area in town that could support light industrial and commercial businesses. Several of our surrounding towns have these commercial areas that make their towns more attractive to business.

The Transfer Station problem has gone on long enough. It is time for the Board of Selectmen to work together with the community and come up with a solution that will be palatable for all. I feel that due to the constraints of the consent agreement we will have to privatize for some time. During this time, we need to find a location and build a transfer/-recycling center. It is unfathomable that this town would go without a facility to bring our household waste.

I believe everyone should have the opportunity and encouragement to participate in local government. We need volunteers on boards and agencies. We need people to attend town meetings to have their voices heard. The town budget should not be decided by a handful of people.
